Coaches and/or Players ejected from a contest

Officials shall file a written report with the school and the OHSAA office whenever a coach or player is ejected from an athletic contest.  Use the "Official's Report" form.  On Official's Report form is located in the handbook for Officials.  Additional forms can be obtained by contacting the Association office or your local association secretary.  The report shall be filed with the reported school and the OHSAA within 48 hours of the ejection.  Whenever an ejection occurs, the ejecting official shall speak with the offender's principal/athletic director no later than the first day following the ejection.  An official failing to follow the ejection protocol and/or failing to file the Official's Report may be penalized in accordance with Section 7 of the OHSAA Handbook for Officials.

The "Official's Report" form is also used to report good or poor sportsmanship, severe injuries, facility problems, or equipment problems.  Ejections other then players or coaches and other items of which the Commissioner should be made aware must be provided.

Please use only one form per school.  Each offending school will need its own copy.  Each report has a document number (top right in red).  The offenses are coded by that number and the School Response Form must match that report.

Do not duplicate the forms for use.  Do not fax the forms to the OHSAA. It is the official's responsibility to send the forms to the reported school.

Please write legibly and include the ejected person's first and last names.   Make sure that the form is complete at the bottom with the date and name of the administrator that you spoke with at the school.

RE:                Soccer Officials Uniform

RE: Soccer Officials Uniform

The recent release dealing with schools providing pinneys for officials when there was not a contrast between the team uniform top and the official’s uniform top has been rescinded. Sorry for any inconvenience the previous release may have caused but I will not have officials wearing pinneys!

Regarding officials’ uniform, Rule 5-1-3 will be applicable in Ohio. It reads as follows:

Art. 3 The officials shall be dressed alike in the uniforms primarily consisting of:

a.   a shirt approved by the state association; in the event of a color
conflict between the officials and either team, the officials shall
change to a jersey of a color distinct from both teams.

Note:  The approved shirt in Ohio beginning with the 2003 season is the gold shirt with black pin stripes. Co-alternate shirts are black with white pin stripes and red with black pin stripes.  It is mandated that all officials working the contest wear the same color shirt.

The USSF Logo is permissible on a shirt as long as the OHSAA patch is worn on the left breast pocket.

An OHSAA patch will be included with the soccer packet mailing to all registered officials for the 2003 season.

Thank you!

OHSAA memo regarding goalkeeper's gloves

ATTENTION:  Athletic Administrators/Boys and Girls Soccer Coaches

RE:   "Fingersaver"/"Ortho-Tec Duo Mega Grip" or Other Type of Goalkeepers Gloves Which Have “Articulated Fingers.”

Based on recent discussion by the members of the National Federation Soccer Rules Committee and further review by the National Federation Sports Advisory Committee, the OHSAA has determined these types of gloves will be considered legal equipment and may be worn by goalkeepers. After discussion and examination of these types of gloves, the following comments were made:

  • "Nothing major wrong with them”

  • “Not considered a splint because fingers bend”

  • “Can open and close, therefore, not a splint”

In addition, the Sports Advisory Committee stated:

  • “Feel they are made to protect fingers of keepers”

  • “No more dangerous than the keepers’ fingers”

  • “When pushing a pair into the wall, they did bend”

**Note: It goes without saying, despite this ruling/interpretation by the OHSAA, the following rules remain applicable when dealing with all types of equipment issues.

Rule 5-2-3a   Officials must inspect equipment prior to the contest.
Rule 4-2-1:    Illegal equipment shall not be worn by any player. This applies to any equipment which, in the opinion of the referee, is dangerous or confusing.
Rule 4-3-1:    Coaches must ensure that players are properly equipped.

If you have any questions regarding this issue, feel free to contact:   OHSAA Assistant Commissioner, John Dickerson, 614-267-2502 or Soccer State Rules Interpreter, Don Muenz, 614-885-2550.
